Letter From President Obama Finally Arrives. 06/24/2010

Well it came after we were told the President would not write this letter to the San Juan Soccer Team for the History they made and for being a great team.

if you look over the past blog entries you will see, I was told by a White House Staff Member , that he would not write a letter.

I am glad it finally came and if any of you want a copy I will more then be happy to mail you a copy or you can print down this blog posting. Just email me or stop by the house.

10 Important Concepts of Tai Chi

Practicing Tai Chi is not merely a swing of the arm and the movement of the feet. There is a reason behind every movement and style that is made. These concepts paved the way to building every form of Tai Chi. So you have to pay close attention on the things that are not brought up every once in a while because even though if things seem so basic, they are indeed important.

Here are 10 of the most important concepts of Tai Chi that you should never take for granted. Remember these and it will make you appreciate more the forms that are performed.

Concept #1

Tai Chi is done with emphasis on every movement and the fashion of every pattern must be in connected with one another. Meaning every motion made must always start from the spine, going down to the waist, then moving lower to the legs and the feet, then it is simultaneously going up to the body then the arms, hands and last, the fingers.

Concept #2

Maintain your shoulders dropped so that any tension will be eliminated. Shoulders that are always propped are said to have overflowing tension.

Concept #3

Your wrists must always be straight in order to form a lady’s hand if you are performing the Cheng form. All points apply to all forms of Tai Chi but the lady’s hand is basic and a very important trait of the Cheng form in order to cultivate the energy flowing in the body.

Concept #4

Moving slowly should always be done every step of the way. It can never be overemphasized because the slow smoothness of your motions will improve the connection of your body and your environment.

Concept #5

Never let anything disconnect you. You should always stay connected with every instruction. If you have been disconnected, continue to perform the movements and listen carefully to the instructions so that you can overcome any distraction.

Concept #6

Your knees must always be bent during the entire form. Your height must not bob down and up. There are some considerations but all the while, your height must always be maintained at a level that is constant.

Concept #7

The power of Tai Chi travels differently from the movement of Tai Chi. Power of Tai Chi will start from the feet going up to the legs, controlling the shoulders, and will be expressed by the fingers and hands.

Concept #8

Your head must be maintained as if it was suspended on air.

Concept #9

Your chest must be depressed and your back should be raised but this must be done without exerting any force.

Concept #10

Your breath must be focused on your dan-tien but force must not be exerted. As time in the program may pass, there will be accomplishments that will fulfill you like synchronizing your breathing with the movements that you make.

You should always consult your teacher when to exhale or inhale.

Why Do My Feet Hurt So Much When I Run?

If you are a seasoned runner you know the importance of a good running shoe. It can make the difference between a great running experience, or potential injury.

The problem is not being informed. Most people do not know that there is a proper shoe for your foot type. Knowing your foot type before you hit the stores can make a world of difference whether you want to do brisk walking, jogging or marathons.

How do you determine your foot type? It’s really quite simple. Get a piece of dark paper and then soak your feet and step on the paper. Look closely at the imprint. There are generally three types of feet.

1) If your imprint covers most of the feet (not much arch at all) then you have flat feet. You are among the 60% of the population in America with flat feet.

2) If you show a wide arch and narrow line of your outer foot then you have high arches. You are among the 30% of the population of in America.

3) If your imprint has a medium arch then congratulations. You are among the 10% of the population in America with the ideal foot.

Regardless of what foot type you have, there are running shoes that are right for you. As many as 56% of the 30 million runners in America, have injuries from improper shoe selection. So you can see that you do have to do your homework to protect yourself.

With all the pressure one gets from TV adds or what is popular to wear now, you really need to put the health aspect first. Most likely you will be able to find a shoe that is right for your foot type and still have style.

To determine the shoe to buy, here are some guidelines:

1) For the flat-footed person, you will want to buy a shoe that is rigid and stable. This will prevent your ankles from bending inward or outward and it will protect you.

2) If you have high arches, you will want to look for a very cushioned shoe. High arched feet don’t absorb shock very well so you’ll want that cushion to help in absorbing the shock for you.

3) For the medium arch or ideal foot, you want the combination of both stability and cushioning for your feet.

When you try on a shoe it should be snug but not tight and there should be approximately a 1/2-inch between your longest toe and the front of your running shoe. Tip: Shop for your shoes late afternoon when your feet are a little more spread. If it is not comfortable when you are in the store, imagine what it will be like when you are out on a run. So test them well while you’re there.

In summary, those shoes you bought that were such a bargain may be cause for concern in the future, so pick wisely and may your running experience be smooth and wonderful. Your feet will be most grateful.

The Popularity of Sports Sponsorship

Sports sponsorship can be observed and dated back to Rome and Ancient Greece where prominent society members supported the arts festival as well as the sports played. By support, it didn’t mean the proper sponsorship or patronage that was considered as a marketing tool. It rather meant continuation of such festivals and athletic events for entertainment.

Today, however, sponsorship through sports has become one of the most popular kinds of sponsorship due to the amount of exposure it can get for both sponsor and sponsee. Sponsoring an athlete or sport means that the sponsor is exchanging products or money for the right to link and associate the company name with the sporting event or athlete.

Why do organizations sponsor sports?

Aside from the popularity tag sports sponsorship gives, a number of other benefits also appeal to the company’s interest. Some of the most common benefits are given below:

Added value to brand

Companies that sponsor sports want their product or range of products to have added value when attached to a sports event or group. By value, this points to product quality, price and/or content. Companies use sports as a leverage to stand out among other competitors, and in turn create for themselves a top position where consumers can remember the name, and possibly have permanent brand recognition.

So what exactly do sports have that other types of sponsorships don’t necessarily offer? To view in terms of goals – sporting events have always had one definite output, and that is there is always a winner in the end. There is always competition; a test of which team or athlete will overcome the other, proving who is superior.

Gold medals, trophies, world records, global awareness are involved in sports and are the symbol of status of teams or athletes in a particular sport. Winners become popular enough to become household names, and this is what appeals to corporations who want to give out sponsorships. They want their name attached to that household name – which will in turn become a household name.

Major corporations such as Gatorade have applied this kind of sponsorship and come out as one of the most popular brands for beverage products. They attach themselves with major sporting events and give relevance by pointing out the benefit of the product to the athlete. This then sticks to the minds of consumers and sports enthusiast about which sports drink is the one to stick to.

Sports sponsorship does not only apply to major companies, but also to small businesses as well. The general idea of brand awareness is still applied and the only difference is the level or scale it covers.

All in all, organizations support sporting events with specific objectives, each of which is addressed below:

• Brand Awareness – this objective seeks to let consumers become aware of the product name.

• Brand Image – this objective attempts to create a specific style and/or personality that distinguishes a brand from its other competitors, and in turn may give premium pricing

• Consumer relations – corporations support sporting events to directly involve themselves with consumers and potential clients, proving that their company is capable of providing proper services and/or products

• Community relations – A more altruistic approach is for this objective wherein the company is concerned about the welfare of a community; and so supporting a sports event can make themselves know to the community

16 Quick Tips for Eating at Restaurants or Work

Most of us eat at restaurants for a variety of reasons; time and convenience are the most common motives. Below is a prepared list of quick tips for eating out of your home.

If you eat healthy food or sensible portions, that you like, you can stick with eating healthy for life.

Your portions should be spaced out over the course of the day. Water should be a part of every meal.

After you eat, your stomach should be half full, or less, with food. For every two parts of food consumed, you should drink one part water. Leave your stomach at least one quarter empty for movement of air.

When eating at a restaurant, eat half a portion, maximum, and wait five or ten minutes. Restaurant portions are commonly two to four meals on a single or double plate.

This is way too much to consume at a single sitting and you may find out that, once you pause and sip your drink, you are already full.

In the Providence, RI area, there are some restaurants where the single portions could feed a family of four. No wonder a man of 200 lbs. is now considered thin. Do not make comparisons to other people. Eat to live and enjoy your food, but do not use someone else’s over indulgence as an excuse for your own.

Establish control over your appetite. Most of us feel guilty if we don’t finish a plate. This is usually conditioning from your childhood. Bury your guilty past and have the rest “wrapped to go.”

Always eat something for breakfast and never “skip it.” When you skip breakfast, you will over-consume for it, later in the day.

Eat slowly and thoroughly chew your food.

Make sure your last meal, or last “snack” of the day, is small and nutritionally dense. Examples: Cereal with fruit, vegetable salad with olive oil and balsamic vinegar, rice with vegetables, and light popcorn, without the extra butter and salt. For those who eat meat or fish: turkey, chicken, or salmon salad on top of fresh greens.

In the later part of your day, skip desserts, sugary cereals, bread, and second portions.

If you absolutely must have sugar: Eat fruit, strawberries with yogurt or low fat cottage cheese, fruit with rice, or almonds with yogurt.

If you must have coffee or alcohol, beware that these should be consumed in extreme moderation. Both substances will dehydrate your body, and you will have to drink extra water to make up for it. Wine is much better than hard alcohol, but one or two glasses a day is the limit.

The Tourney this weekend in Newark Ca went well from what I heard I would have loved to have traveled there however with my back injury it makes it hard for me to go far now a days.

The team came in 3rd and brought home a trophy! Very nice looking trophy also.

WOw!

What a Saturday at this tourney, some good games gong on and the sportsmanship so far has been AWESOME!

Not as much fans as the past years, it may be do to the fact that not all teams that are in this tourney are being allowed to play here at Cherry Island so the crowds arent that big, it is a bummer, all teams should be playing here.

It makes it tough for the parents who have to drive from Cherry Island to Orangevale citrus heights area in between games for each child. The children are more then likely late for each game, however is it fair to ask a parent to leave a game early for one child to get another child to their game when in all reality they all should be playing in one area?

I do consider a safety factor when you think about it, trying to get your child to the gamer on time so they can start, since most coaches will not start you if you are not on time.

however here are some pictures, the videos are being loaded as we speak... well not all of them that will take a few days.

The General Manager who's name is Mr.Bell and I were talking about all of the new things that Jamba Juice is doing for the community and they will help your youth soccer teams with fundraising or even sponsorships.

One thing that is interesting is that you could hold team sign ups at his stores and the team will get 20% back in the sales the store makes, that is for having the team sign up at the store...(That is a really good deal)

I would suggest that the local soccer clubs contact Mr. Bell and discuss what Jamba Juice can do for the teams.

I will have to disagree with this article, there is no way any one person can say that there are only two ( THE BEST) good athletes at a school.

The soccer team has made history and they have very good players on their teams and I am sure the other sport teams at the school have good players however to name two people and say they are the best is a bit far fetched.

Boys hold your head up you made history and you are all GOOD players and no one can take that away from you.

I think you all are WONDERFUL and work great as a TEAM, after all that is what it is about TEAMWORK, not just one person....

Blocked from Faxing the Senators

I am very shocked and disappointed about this recent turn of events.

I faxed a letter to three Senatrs asking them to send a Letter of Congrats to our Soccer Team and I was following up and guess what?!!!!!

my phone number is BLOCKED! I dialed the fax number and a recording says "per the customer your number is blocked from calling this number"

I am a taxpaying citzen the last time I checked and I do have a right to contact the WHITE HOUSE and the SENATORS, I think it is really funny since I just faxed Lundgren and then my number is blocked.

I just want everyone to know that I guess only the select few are allowed to contact these people we put into office.

It is shameful that we are treated like 3rd class citizens.

We are supposed to the home of the brave and free, however I have never be treated like this before and to be treated like this needs to be broadcasted so all people understand that we do have rights as tax paying citizens to contact the Senators and the WHITE HOUSE

Asking for a Letter of Congrats for a SOCCER TEAM and following up with it is not a crime in anyway.

The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,
I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight.
My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,
My daughter beside me, angelic in rest.
Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white,
Transforming the yard to a winter delight.

The sparkling lights in the tree I believe,
Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve.
My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,
Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep.
In perfect contentment, or so it would seem,
So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream.

The sound wasn't loud, and it wasn't too near,
But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear.
Perhaps just a cough, I didn't quite know, Then the
sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow.
My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear,
And I crept to the door just to see who was near.

Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night,
A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight.
A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old,
Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold.
Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled,
Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child.

"What are you doing?" I asked without fear,
"Come in this moment, it's freezing out here!
Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve,

But my wife sends me pictures, he's sure got her smile.

Away from my family, my house and my home.

I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet,

Prevention is the Key to Avoiding Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

DO have your fuel-burning appliances -- including oil and gas furnaces, gas water heaters, gas ranges and ovens, gas dryers, gas or kerosene space heaters, fireplaces, and wood stoves -- inspected by a trained professional at the beginning of every heating season. Make certain that the flues and chimneys are connected, in good condition, and not blocked.

DO choose appliances that vent their fumes to the outside whenever possible, have them properly installed, and maintain them according to manufacturers’ instructions.

DO read and follow all of the instructions that accompany any fuel-burning device. If you cannot avoid using an unvented gas or kerosene space heater, carefully follow the cautions that come with the device. Use the proper fuel and keep doors to the rest of the house open. Crack a window to ensure enough air for ventilation and proper fuel-burning.

DO call the Consumer Product Safety Commission ( 1-800-638-2772 ) at www.cpsc.gov for more information on how to reduce your risks from CO and other combustion gases and particles.

DON’T idle the car in a garage -- even if the garage door to the outside is open. Fumes can build up very quickly in the garage and living area of your home.

DON’T use a gas oven to heat your home, even for a short time.

DON’T ever use a charcoal grill indoors -- even in a fireplace.

DON'T sleep in any room with an unvented gas or kerosene space heater.

DON’T use any gasoline-powered engines (mowers, weed trimmers, snow blowers, chain saws, small engines or generators) in enclosed spaces.

DON’T ignore symptoms, particularly if more than one person is feeling them. You could lose consciousness and die if you do nothing.

Never saw so much RED TAPE

I have just heard back from SAFEWAY yes at this time of night, it is 949PM here.

They apparently have to have this and that to do anything... WOW I never knew there was so much RED TAPE in the Grocer Business. Hmmm I wonder if the GOVt maybe need ot take tips from Safeway on how to use RED TAPE.

It really surpises me once again how a local business wants the community to shop in there stores however cannot see it to Support the local community.

This is something we all need to CELEBRATE and there should be no RED TAPE involved in it. This is a group of young men who came together and worked as a team to make History for their school and community.

We all should be showing them how proud we are of them.

I have contacted several retailers and restaurants to see if they would like to donate a meal or a drink or something to our boys for making history for the school and the community which we live in.

Well so far here is a list of places right here in Citrus Heights, ca in our local community that has declined to give or donate anything to our soccer team, it is a shame for these businesses to operate in our local community however they expect us to support them and buy their product's, however they cannot give back to our future and the up and coming neighbors of this community?

Denny's on greenback and sunrise right behind fireside, well the GM said that the FRANCHISE owner does not like to give to the community....hmmm well then we should not eat at his restaurant......if your in our community then it is a give and take and we have patronage your place over the last 17 years... Please think twice before eating at this Denny's ...........remember a community supports each other...

Jamba Juice in Birdcage next to Verizon also declined to my request. stating that they have already donated all they will.
I do not think 28 drinks will really break them, do you?

What I do not understand is that it gives them word of mouth business.
It is a tax write off for each business to donate.

Regardless,

I will not eat at Denny's on Greenback or Jamba Juice in Birdcage.

I do not think I asked for alot from any one business, knowing the business world and all of the write offs for doing things like this it is just really sad that they want us to be their customers however they can't give back to a team that lives and breathes in their community.

When a Ref needs to be removed from a game

I am on both sides here, it is hard for me to say that a Ref is wrong, however when disrespect comes into play, I must speak up.

When it comes in to the point it is interfering with the flow of the game and also teaching the children playing the game that even though they follow the rules it really does not matter since this man in this Ref shirt says i was wrong or that my coach is wrong.

That is not correct or even in the training for the ref's at all.

We are going to refer to the game played at SJHS on 10/06/08, the ref made a call that was not a legal call and the coach asked him what did he call and when he said what he called the coach said that is not a foul that is legal and then left it alone, at that time the REF yells who are you? and the coach replied back I am an asst Coach and the Ref yells back YEAH RIGHT and so the other coach say to the ref that is not the way you talk to a coach and you do not have to be disrespectful and then the REF stops the game comes over and acts like a total A&& he moved the coaches down the field and when he was told he was being disrespectful he said he can do what he wants he runs this game...

When a Ref thinks like this it is time to move him off from being the center ref, if he came in with a problem with the team or any of the coaches he either needs to call the ref scheduler or leave his problems at the gate.

District 6 needs to make sure they are sending Ref's out that can call a fair game. and that is all that matters is that the game is called fairly.

Most of the Ref's are Wonderful and really good with the boys and the coaches, however we do have the select few that try to ruin the game for everyone.

If I can report the games and the plays fairly and take pictures of all teams, then i am sure the Ref's can also do the same thing after all they are PAID to be here, I am Not PAID in anyway for my TIME I DEVOTE to the soccer teams.

Well I can say great job to all of the teams that played in this tournament this past weekend.
However, Congratulations to all of the boys on Sunrise United for taking 1st place in the U-19 Division, it was not an easy victory, the last two teams were there to win and they were also very aggressive to the point that it should not have been allowed, however soon the Center Ref got control of the game back once again.

I am so proud of ALL of the BOYS that came to play as a team and not be a one man team, Sunrise United Came together as a whole team and we are all very proud of them.

Do I have to throw out all of my referee jerseys and buy new ones?

No. The previous jersey design is perfectly acceptable. You should not feel obligated to discard these still-approved referee jerseys in order to purchase the new design. Purchases of the new uniform may be made when you need a new jersey or you want to add an additional color. This is also true for the socks.

What if I show up to a game and I have a referee jersey that is the previous design and the referee, or referees, I am working with has a referee jersey that is the new design?

You may all work the game in the jerseys you have. It is acceptable if one or two referees have the previous design and the others have the new design. It is more important that they be the same color. A referee assessor may not deduct points for a crew that has mismatched uniform designs, provided that the uniforms feature approved designs and are the same color.

Will there come a time when the new jersey design will be the only design that will be recognized by U.S. Soccer?

There is no date set, and no plans to set a date, by which the old jerseys will be “phased out.” To be clear, both the old and new designs comply with the “Standards of Dress and Appearance” listed in the referee administrative handbook – the only differences are aesthetic. For the old jerseys to be phased out, it would require a change to these Standards, and U.S. Soccer would not make such a change without providing a fair amount of lead time to the entire referee community. It should be noted, however, that OSI has ceased manufacturing the previous design.

Will the new design be the only design accepted at USYS or USASA regional and national competitions?

No. Again, the parameters for referee uniforms are set by U.S. Soccer and approved by its Board. Both the old and new design meet the standards set by U.S. Soccer, and its organizational members have a responsibility

Indoor Soccer always fun to watch

Well, I went to my first Indoor soccer game for the season and after my injury on 07/12/08, my sons 17th birthday and as always it was enjoyable to watch the teams play. I just wish it was a bit more comfortable for me to sit now and watch a game, my back injury has really changed my lifestyle.

Goal Setting: A crucial skill in a keeper’s development.

There is a point in each keeper’s development that they realize that being a keeper isn’t just fun and games. They realize there performance and development directly impact the team and in many cases the win or loss column. I think I realized this around 14 years old, which was my freshman year of high school. Like the majority of keepers I didn’t have a goalkeeper coach or a head coach that new much about my specialized position. I realized that in order for me to increase my technique and game awareness I needed to start developing my own training regiment to the best of my abilities. Without knowing the psychology of it all I started developing practice goals for the day and short term goals to attain before my next match. I shared these with my back up and the JV keepers.

Learning to set goals will give a keeper the ability to develop a clear course of action on where they want to go (performance level) and how to get there. The first stage of this is to set “Performance” based goals rather than “Outcome” goals. Outcome goals are not entirely under our control. An example of this could be number of saves. Performance goals are something keepers can control. Such as “ I am going to attack floated crosses played in the air above my head at my highest point”. There is nothing wrong with a keeper stating a goal such as “ I want to make All Conference or All State”. Ambition is great. More importantly is the “how” will that goal be attained.

Make the performance goals realistic; goals that challenge you but are attainable. If a goal is too easy there will be nothing learned or gained by the exercise. An unrealistic goal may also be a detriment since the satisfaction of an accomplishment may never be felt or measured. Set goals in measurable and behavioral terms. “This training session I want to ……” or “This game I will organize and communicate effectively with my central defenders.”

Detail the performance based goals in short and long terms. Short term range goals provide the opportunity to see immediate improvement. Short term goals help to motivate and are steps toward your longer range goal. Longer range goals could be season goals our yearly goals. An example of a Long term yearly goal could be “ Before I return to camp next year I would like to become better at timing and patience when coming out on breakaways”

It is important to write your goals down on a paper. Seeing them in writing helps keep a clear focus. In my mind, it also makes them real if they are on paper. Weightlifters keep a journal that documents their daily workouts to track their progress. Keepers can modify this technique and write down each practice goal as it progresses or builds to a short term goal for a specified date. This allows them to track their progress, reflect on where they started, how far they have come, and also helps detail training exercises that worked well to achieve the desired result. This technique helps make their commitment to achieving the goal stronger and also creates a sense of accomplishment at competition. Once these goals have been identified it is not only important to document them but to also identify target dates. “By When”. Again be challenging but reasonable when selecting a date. Don’t expect to be proficient with breakaways within a week.

Goals should be set for practice and for competition. Practice goals as mentioned are often critical to achieving game goals. The daily practice goals should be positive statements. “Today I am going help improve my catching and absorbing of harder shots at the body to limit my number of rebounds”

The next step in goal setting is to identify a keeper’s support and feedback network. Keepers are under constant scrutiny from fans, teammates, coaches, and the opposition. Keepers should identify a support network that can help achieve their goals. Identify who amongst the network can provide constructive feedback. Obtaining feedback from others helps keepers attain a sense of accomplishment and helps keep the focus clear. Often we are our own worst critics, which is why keepers rely on others also for positive feedback. In the right mindset and at the right time self-assessment is vital to a keeper’s individual development. It too can keep the mind focused and driven.

The time for self-assessment is after practice and especially after games. Teammates feed off of a keeper's emotion as do the other team. Other than excitement a keeper should not show much emotion. If a soft goal is conceded it must be filed away in a keeper’s head for after the game. The best way to deal with the situation and the resulting emotions is to correct the mistake in their head quickly, file it away, and then begin focusing their energy on the next play. That goal is gone. To help prevent another mistake it is important to stay in the present. No need to think about the past goal or anticipate the future. After the game the keeper can sit with their support network, coaches, and reflect on the mistakes to identify development opportunities and goals before the next game.

Example Of Goal Setting

Long Term Goal: Dominate the box on crosses

By October 15th

Short Range Goal: “ I am going to attack floated crosses played in the air above my head at my highest point”

By: September 30th.

Day 1, Sept 23rd: Work on driving the appropriate knee up and landing on two feet. Attack the ball above my head at my highest point. Hand Services from shorter distance

Day 2, Sept 24th: Continue with using the appropriate knee and attacking the ball at my highest point. Introduce pressure and harder services.

This will build by day until the Sept 30th. Long term and short term goals should stay constant within a date range but the daily goals should be written down and crossed off when completed or accomplished.

Each time a keeper steps on the pitch it is a learning experience whether it be a practice or game. Goal Setting will help prepare a keeper for match play and guide their technical as tactical development. Each keeper learns and progresses differently. The introduction of goal setting techniques will help young keepers focus their energy on one technical element rather than trying to be Tim Howard after one session. The result will be a sense of accomplishment and noticeable growth. At times we are our own worst critics. As coaches, we are also responsible for providing positive feedback and managing expectations.

Communicating With The Defense On Corners and Crosses

Crosses and corner kicks are considered "high concentration" situations for a keeper and his/her defense. Obviously, the keeper must focus on the ball as the service is taken so that he/she can properly judge the flight of the ball to handle the situation.

What should a keeper do to help keep his/her defense organized and concentrating during these situations?

Preventing the cross by the defender ("No Service!"). ORGANIZE YOUR DEFENSE THROUGH COMMUNICATION!!!

Your defense should be man - marking when their opponent is within the 18 yard box; and following is the correct position for the defender:

defenders should be goal-side of their mark.
defenders should be ball-side of their mark
defenders should touch their mark
When a crossing or corner kick situation occurs, the keeper should steal a quick look at his/her defense to observe any dangerous situations that may occur in marking. Then, as the keeper turns his/her focus to the ball, communication should begin loud and clear instructing the defense to stay goal-side, ball-side and touch your mark UNTIL the ball is either in the keeper’s hands or the ball is out of harms way. Too many times a defender will lose his/her mark after the ball has been touched by a player in the box but it has not been cleared out of danger.
Always keep reminding your defense to stay goal-side, ball-side and touch their mark and the possibility of needless goals may diminish.

Well it was good to see Soccer Mentioned on the local news(news10) however it makes me wonder if the anchors children were not playing in the tourney would it have been mentioned?

I am happy it was, our children deserve to be mentioned ,.they Play soccer and it is HOT on the fields.

Parking is 5.00 per day to enter the complex. you will love the Complex.

The Ref's are AWESOME and FAIR, please remember what you see on the side lines is not what they see being in the center and in the middle of the play, be respectful and please NO FOUL LANGUAGE. Not everyone is going to agree with the calls of the play and you do not have to, however you have to remember your not the player on the field and your actions do affect their playing time and the way they play.

Bystanders and Parent's We love seeing you here to cheer the teams on! But we need you to understand it is the teams game and that means let them play. Don't yell at the players(even if it is your child) unless you are yelling positive things to them, remember it is their game once again let them play it with good sportsmanship.

The way we act and react off the field is brought on to the field through our children and if you show frustration and anger towards your child on that field, they will in return take it out on the other team and possibly hurt one seriously, we do not need that,

already today on field 7 we have a team with a player with a broken leg...

The Myth of Advanced Goalkeeper Training

Through the years I have been constantly asked by parents, players, etc. that they are searching for “advanced goalkeeper training.” Their previous training has taught them the basics and now they are ready for something else. They have learned how to catch the ball, move their feet, dive, deal with crosses, etc. Now their question is what is the next progression of my training?? The truly unfortunate thing, advanced training does not exist! There is no such thing as “advanced goalkeeper training” where you will progress to these big, grand training exercises that are extremely complex in nature. In fact, the higher level that you play at, the training gets even more simplified.

Goalkeeping is a very simple position. To be successful at this position though you need to be very technically sound. Meaning, you are comfortable with your body and you have the ability to move and catch balls cleanly…all the time! All it takes is ONE mistake, and we lose in our position. Field players do not have this pressure on them at all, if they make a mistake, they just lose possession. Big deal! This is not a punishment as they still have the opportunity to win the ball back before conceding a goal. But, when the goalkeeper makes a mistake, it almost always leads to a certain goal.

So, what does this mean? Goalkeepers, whether you are a U12 player or the full professional, you will always train the same sort of things. The difference? The professional will deal with more pace on the ball, will be forced to be quicker, stronger, etc. in their movements. This is what “advanced training” is all about. But, the core training exercises will not change and that is where people get confused or led in the wrong direction. You will not reach a point where all of a sudden you say, WOW, these exercises are so complex, look at how advanced this training session is today. If you are proficient and clean with your training, to make it more “advanced” all you need to do is increase the speed/pace of the incoming service or shot, force yourself to get set quicker, etc. But the exercises do not need to change…just the elements within the exercise like service, angles, etc.

As a former professional goalkeeper I can honestly say that goalkeeper training is extremely boring! Why? It is boring because of the nature of our training being SO repetitious. We see repetition after repetition in training. But we need to have this boredom from repetitions because of the things I mentioned above about making mistakes. All it takes is one mistake and we lose. So our training must work on our technique on a daily basis to limit these mistakes and stay sharp and confident. Training will revolve around repetition after repetition of simple things. It is about conditioning our body and our muscle memory so we do things efficiently and clean…thus no mistakes and less goals conceded. But like anything in life, the more you do things over and over, the more it becomes boring. I always ask the question though, how boring is it on a Saturday when you just kept a clean sheet against the top team in the league? Now that repetition after repetition in training all week long does not seem so bad because you were sharp and confident going into the match.

A few years ago at one of our residential goalkeeper schools we had a great dose of reality to a lot of our players. We are constantly discussing muscle memory in our sessions and the purpose behind all of our very simple exercises. Our motto is “Train Like a Professional” and we emphasize that professionals train the exact sessions and exercises that we are doing on a daily basis. Most new players to our sessions think we are crazy and that the pros train much more difficult exercises, it is not just move your feet and catch over and over again…Well, as luck would have it that week, the Chicago Fire were training on the same fields we were holding our sessions. After our session we allowed our goalkeepers to sit and watch the Fire goalkeepers train for about forty-five minutes. About 10 minutes into the training session our staff began noticing all of our players whispering to each other and pointing at the Fire goalkeepers. We called them all in to ask them what was going on…They quickly said, they are doing “exactly” the same exercises that we just did this morning. All the exercises consisted of were moving your feet and catch…quickly move to get your feet set and deal with a simple shot. It was at that moment they all truly saw for the first time that what we were saying was correct. The pros do train the simple things!

The position of a goalkeeper is not a rocket science! You will get out what you put into it and if you are consistently working to fine tune your technique so when you react you are reacting perfectly, you are on the right path to be a big-time goalkeeper!

On 01/25/08 we lost a young man and a great friend to many.. Zachary Shane Curtice(24) was killed on Madison Ave around 11:15 AM.
Alot of us saw Zac around 10:30 AM and we were laughing and joking around, how sad and eye opening it is on how a few mins or seconds can change a life forever.
I have made a Tshirt in memory of Zac and it is now up for sale and all proceeds will be going to the Curtice Family.

A thickened heart muscle (in HCM, predominantly of the left ventricle) is more sensitive to a lack of blood supply and more irritable than a normal heart. As a consequence of this irritability, the heart is more prone to dangerous forms of heart irregularities, such as ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation, which can render heart contractions fatally ineffective, unless treated.

HCM is thought to cause one out of every three cases of sudden death among athletes, and approximately one person in 500 births is affected by HCM. The disease is hereditary in more than half the cases.

Athletes with HCM are at greater risk because the two factors that are thought to trigger a catastrophic event in a hypertrophied heart muscle that characterizes this condition are dehydration and increased adrenaline. Both are common situations during physical exertion.

The good news is that, if detected, even "silent" heart conditions such as HCM can be treated. However, physicians cannot treat what is not diagnosed, and, in the case of young athletes, the longtime standard of pre-sports physical exams may not go far enough to find defects and avert tragedy. In the majority of "regular" exams, the physician listens to the heart's sounds with a stethoscope. This method of examination, called auscultation, has remained unchanged since the invention of the stethoscope in 1819.

Until recently, the technology that allows doctors actually to see the function and structural health of the heart--ultrasound--was not well-suited (by virtue of cost, immobility of equipment, and complexity of a full-scale examination) for screening groups of people, many of whom show no symptoms of a potential problem. Today, there is an option of a different approach, as new forms of ultrasound technology make broader application of cardiac screening practical and feasible from medical, economic, and logistical perspectives.

When ultrasound is used to examine the heart, it is known as echocardiography or an "echo." In this painless, noninvasive diagnostic test, low-power, high-frequency sound waves bounce over the heart and produce a picture that allows a trained health care professional to assess the thickness, size, and function of the organ. The difference between using a stethoscope and an echo to examine the function of the heart is like night and day. With one, you can only listen; with the other, you can actually look inside.

This is not to say that the use of a stethoscope is not important and valuable during physical exams. In a number of cases, cardiac ultrasound screening could be an effective adjunct to "regular" exams to reduce the risk of complications from undiagnosed cardiovascular disease, up to and including sudden death.

In particular, hand-carried devices that offer a lower-cost way to bring exams to groups of people are being used to perform "limited" echoes--a type of exam that allows physicians to look quickly at the heart, but is not as costly as a "full" checkup that doctors would perform on a patient suspected of having a problem, or in a case in which a limited echo showed something that warrants examining further.

A study by Barry J. Maron of the Minneapolis (Minn.) Heart Institute Foundation and colleagues reviewed 158 fatal incidents among athletes and found that sudden death is most common among basketball and football players, the sports with the highest participation levels in the U.S. Together, these two groups accounted for 68% of sudden deaths. The median age of death was 17 years old, and the prevalence was disproportionately higher among males, as well as African-American athletes. Ninety percent collapsed during or immediately after a training session, with 63% of deaths occurring between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. (the time period when most games and practices occur).

Trends in Sudden Cardiovascular Death in Young Competitive Athletes after Implementation of a Preparticipation Screening Program

Date: Oct. 4, 2006

Why it’s important: The deaths of young athletes is a tragedy that could be avoided in many cases if the athletes, their coaches and physicians knew of heart problems before the youngsters began strenuous physical activity. Understanding the value of screening programs to identify such problems could lead to more systematic screening in nations around the world.

What’s already known: Most young athletes who die suddenly are found to have a previously unknown heart defect with which they were born. A condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is most common cause of sudden death in young athletes in the United States, accounting for one-third of all mortalities. In Italy, one-fourth of such deaths are caused by arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy. Cardiomyopathy is a weakening of the heart muscle or a change in heart muscle structure such that the heart no longer pumps blood well.

Screening young athletes before they begin competition can identify potentially deadly heart problems. By preventing these youths from participating in such activities, authorities can reduce sudden death. Under Italian law passed in 1982, all youths who take part in competitive sports must undergo a screening evaluation by a physician before they are deemed eligible. In 1982, Italy instituted a nationwide systematic screening program. The screening included a sophisticated electrocardiogram to measure the electrical activity of the heart called a 12-lead ECG or electrocardiogram.

How this study was done: The researchers analyzed the trends in sudden cardiovascular death rates in competitive athletes 12 to 35 years old in the Veneto region of Italy between 1979 and 2004. Sudden cardiovascular death rates were analyzed in the non-athletic unscreened population of the same age range as the control. All deaths among athletes and nonathletes were investigated medically by a local pathologist or medical examiner, who determined whether the death was heart-related. If it was, then the heart was sent to the Institute for Pathological Anatomy for detailed assessment. The medical history, athletic activity and circumstances surrounding the heart stoppage were all investigated. The investigators looked at three periods: prescreening (1979-81), early screening (1982-92) and late screening (1993-2004). The screening consisted of family and personal medical history, a physical examination and a 12-lead ECG. If the athletes had positive findings, more tests were done. The researchers also looked at the causes of disqualification of young athletes in the early and late screening period.

What was found: Over the entire period of the study, 55 cases of sudden cardiovascular death occurred in the screened population of athletes 12 to 35 in the Veneto region. Fifty were male and five were female. Fifty of the cases occurred during the sports activity or immediately after.

They found that the number and rates of sudden cardiovascular death decreased in the population over the 26 years of the study. Between 1979-80, the annual death rate was 3.6 per 100,000 per-years (eight deaths). In 1981-82, there were nine sudden deaths for a 4.0 per 100,000 person-years death rate. The death rate decreased steadily after that. In 2001-04 there was one sudden death per period for a rate of 0.43 per 100,000 person-years — about one-tenth that recorded 1980-81.

During the period of the study, the annual incidence of sudden death from heart-related problems decreased 89 percent in screened athletes. By contrast, the death rate did not change in the unscreened nonathletes.

The authors, led by Domenico Corrado, M.D., Ph.D., of the University of Padua Medical School in Italy, noted that there were 14 deaths during the prescreening period. Twelve of those occurred during sports activity. In the early screening period, there were 29 deaths, 27 of them sports related. In the late screening period, there 12 deaths, 11 of which were sports related. By contrast, there was no difference in the death rates in the unscreened population that did not take part in competitive sports. A total of 265 sudden deaths occurred in this population. Two percent of athletes were disqualified from taking part in competitive sport for heart problems during the period of the screening.

“Our trend analysis showed that the incidence of sudden death from arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy decreased dramatically over the 26-year period and accounted for much of the change in mortality from cardiomyopathy," the authors wrote. "The downward trend of fatal events from this cardiomyopathy paralleled the concomitant increase in the number of athletes with cardiomyopathies successfully identified and hence disqualified from competition over the screening periods. All these findings suggest that screening athletes for cardiomyopathies is a life-saving strategy and that 12-lead ECG is a sensitive and powerful tool for identification and risk stratification of athletes with cardiomyopathies…These data demonstrate the benefit of the current Italian screening program and have important implications for implementing screening strategies for prevention of sudden death in athletes in other countries.”

In an accompanying editorial, Paul D. Thompson, M.D., of Hartford Hospital and the University of Connecticut, Hartford, and Benjamin D. Levine, M.D., of Presbyterian Hospital and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, wrote: “The study by Corrado et al provides the best evidence to date supporting the preparticipation screening of athletes and provocative evidence for including ECGs in this process. However, cardiologists and other physicians involved in the evaluation of athletes can take a valuable lesson from Corrado et al, and collaborate to develop a rigorous, comprehensive regional or national registry to study the preparticipation screening process prospectively and directly, and to determine how to implement such programs most effectively and how to manage asymptomatic athletes with cardiac abnormalities detected by the screening process.”

The bottom line: Screening young athletes for heart problems provides the best way to identify those for whom competitive sports could prove deadly. A systematic method of insuring that all young athletes receive such screening could save many young lives.

The death of Antonio Puerta

In August, Antonio Puerta, Sevilla's 22 year old midfielder collapses in a match against Getafe. He lies unconscious for three days in hospital with multiple organ failure and irreversible brain damage. Puerta's death shocks the world and highlights an invisible killer, a type of cardiomyopathy that afflicts athletes in their prime and previously taken the lives of Mark Vivien Foe and Miklos Feher. Tragically, his girlfriend was expecting their first child. His jersey number is provisionally retired only to be used by his son born October 22, in the event he plays for Sevilla.

Loss touches all of us and death is not the only cause of our losses. Losses and disappointments happen throughout the life span and affect personal and family lives. We lose our health, good friends who move away, jobs and spouses through divorce. We suffer the disappointment of missed promotions, the loss of financial security, loss of our children and grandchildren through family disputes and the list could go on. We may face loss and disappointment regularly and never really stop to consider what is happening to us. Have you ever suffered from a loss or disappointment? Maybe you have and don't even realize it you just thought that was how life was supposed to be.

Learning to recognize your losses and learning to deal with them can help you throughout your life as you face additional losses. You can find meaning in your losses and in spite of the pain, learn from your experiences.

Recognizing Losses

Many research studies have been conducted on the grieving process and handling death, but few studies have focused on managing the change brought about by disappointments and losses. Whenever we experience a change that requires giving up familiar patterns, we suffer a loss or disappointment. In a research study conducted by Family and Consumer Science Extension Agents, over 500 people were asked to tell about their losses and disappointments, rate the severity of them, what feelings they had, and what helped them to cope with or get over them.

Most of us recognize the obvious losses such as death, divorce, or loss of a favorite possession. But it's important to realize that the less obvious losses and disappointments can also be very significant.

Losses

Health: physical and mental illnesses, injuries, chronic diseases
Relationships other than divorce: siblings and family estrangement, unhappy marriages, problems with children, grandchildren, co-workers, friends
Work/financial: jobs (loss of a job, downsizing, changing jobs), businesses, homes (moving, fires, etc.)
Divorce
Death
Pregnancy issues (unfaithfulness, unexpected children, miscarriage, abortion, infertility)
Losses from violence (rape, sexual assault)
Loss of a dream or vision
Loss of independence and self-esteem
The most shocking experiences of loss are those that alter the structure and functioning of our personal and family life. These kinds of losses and disappointments can have lasting impacts.

Much of the grieving we do comes from those losses that are easy to identify. The source of grief is obvious when someone dies, we experience a divorce, or we move away from our family and friends. The not-so-obvious losses and disappointments are more difficult to identify. An exciting event such as the birth of a baby may bring the loss of independence. Or a job promotion may bring the loss of valued clientele.

Grieving Is an Individual Experience

Grieving is an individual experience. A major loss for one person, may be only a minor disappointment to another. The intensity of the loss or disappointment is often dependent on the significance of what was lost. The time span for recovery is also very individualized. For some, recovery may take only a few months, but for others experiencing the same or similar loss, it could take years.

Every person works out his or her own method of surviving or coping during times of loss. Some people turn to friends while others like to be alone. Some seek out support groups and counselors while others stay at home and cry. Physical activity, reading, working, talking, writing, and praying are all coping mechanisms that people use to cope with losses and disappointments.

Healing from a loss or disappointment is a process. All of us know that it takes time to get over something that overwhelms us. Time, together with a change in attitude are the most helpful things to help you recover. Primary support, such as family, friends, and church, along with time are also helpful. It is important to move on, talk with others, and let others help if you are to recover from your loss or disappointment. Give yourself time to grieve and to heal.

Well I said I would keep everyone updated on things.

The Letter came today from the Mayor and the boys at SJHS should each have a copy before they leave school today.

Ok so I posted that I wrote to the Mayor of our city and the Gov of our State and the PRESident of the USA.

Today(11/28/07) the Boys received the Letter from the Gov! Thank YOU!

We are still waiting for the MAyor of our City to contact us.

The News Channels should be ashamed of themselves, since we are the communiity.

I will post more if and when I get any more letters or phone calls.
